CAROLINA MELIS / DESIGNER
Italian born Carolina Melis trained as dancer and choreographer before starting a career in design. In 2004 she graduated from Central Saint Martins in London where she specialised in animation and illustration. Since 2004 Carolina worked as director on TV commercials in London, Beijing, LA and Milan directing spots for MTV, Sony, BBC, Microsoft, Prada, Barclays, Vodafone, Chloé, Fendi, a series of short films for Animal Planet and music videos for Colleen, Metronomy, Four Tet to mention a few. Beside her career as director Carolina is also an internationally known illustrator having worked for client such as Elle, Vogue Japan, LeSportSac, Volkswagen.
In 2010 she was commissioned by ISRE (the Institute of Ethnography of Sardinia) to make the film Le fiamme di Nule, a short promo about weaving in Sardinia. This film was the opportunity to learn about the world of textile of Sardinia, a passion that lead to starting of Mio Karo, a project entirely dedicated to the design and production of rugs and fine textiles hand made in Sardinia in close collaboration with the local artisans.
Her textiles are often inspired by traditional motifs and highly inspired by her background in choreography, exploring ideas of dynamic and harmony by playing with variations and breaking geometries.
