About this technique
The piece is entirely hand made is Sardinia in the village of Nule. Sardinia has a very ancient tradition in weaving and there are still hundreds of active looms throughout the island.
There is a huge variation of techniques and designs; this textile in particular was created on a vertical loom (mat weaving), a very laborious method that produces a smooth, uniform fabric. The final product is extremely compact and resistant. The wool used come from sheep from the same areas and most colours are naturally dyed.
This design is a reinterpretation of the typical motif from Nule called fiamma. The pieces are part of a series of 6 rugs, all woven in Nule between 2012 and 2013.
The first collection of large scale pieces was commissioned by the Institute of Ethnography of Sardinia (ISRE) and presented at the Italian Cultural Institute in London in 2011.
